Model?

This is coolbert:

From the Chicago Tribune today:

Details of the jihadist plot, alleged, to use radio-controlled [RC] model airplanes to attack points of interest in Washington D.C. Points of course to include the White House, the Capitol, the Pentagon.

American home-grown[?] jihadi terrorist caught in a sting operation, the idea to use the RC models however his?

"Miniature planes a new model for terror"

"Alleged plot foiled, but vulnerability remains"

"The F-86 Sabre was a fighter jet that played a pivotal role in the Korean War. And it was models of that plane and other - - packed with explosives - - that Rezwan Ferdaus allegedly planned to use to launch his own war against targets in Washington, D.C."

"Miniature versions of the plane - - 5 feet 6 inches long - - can be acquired easily for less that $200 from websites serving mode plane enthusiasts."

A RC model plane packed with explosives, C-4 or Pemex, and controlled by the terrorist to fly into a target, is a do-able? And could potentially do a lot of damage. And the psychological "bother" even more profound, as with most terrorist operations?

This particular "plan" as conceived by Rezwan was to transpire with first the RC model plane flown on to target and exploding, followed up by a ground assault using as many as six gunmen. An aerial attack alone I would have thought to have been enough at the minimum.

Rezwan had not only "hatched" the plan, but he had actually taken possession of the RC model in anticipation of launching such at attack. Rezwan did not only want to do the deed, he was the process of doing so!!

"a few pounds of C-4 in a confined and crowded space such as a sports stadium or outdoor concert venue could produce mass casualties." Surely so!

[all it takes is a quarter [1/4] pound of C-4 explosive to bring down an airliner!!]

And the idea of using the RC model of large size as a terrorist weapon of unconventional nature is even mentioned in the book: "Spetsnaz" by Viktor Suvorov:

Soviet unconventional warfare forces as a prelude to a general and all-out war on the "west" and NATO attacking targets of importance to include the WHITE HOUSE!!

"a van comes to a halt on the vast empty parking lot in front of a supermarket in Washington. Three men open the door of the van, roll out the fuselage of a light aircraft and attack its wings. A minute later its motor burst into life. The plane takes off and disappears into the sky. it has no pilot. It is controlled by radio with the aid of very simple instrument, only slightly more complicated that those used by model aircraft enthusiasts. The plane climbs to about 200 meters and immediately begins to descend in the direction of the White House. A minute later a might explosion shakes the capital of the United States. The screaming of siren on police cars, the engines and ambulances fills the city."

"Three minutes later a second plane sweeps across the centre of the city and there is a second explosion in the place where the White House once stood. The second plane has taken off from a section of highway under construction and has a quite different control system. Two cars with radio beacons in them have been left earlier in the middle of the city. The beacons have switched on immediately a few seconds before the planes take-off. The automatic pilot is guided by the two beacons and starts to descend according to a previously worked out trajectory. The second plane has been sent off by a second group operating independently of the first one."

And too before "Spetsnaz" there was Superman? From back in the mid-1950's there was a television episode where the fictional cartoon and television character Superman had to combat an extortionist who used RC MODEL AIRCRAFT PACKED WITH EXPLOSIVES TO ATTACK TARGETS! Life imitates art? You take it from there.

coolbert.
