Quemoy.

This is coolbert:

Been a long time now since we last heard of Quemoy and Matsu.

Indeed, SIXTY YEARS AGO IT WAS THOUGHT THAT THE UNITED STATES MIGHT ACTUALLY BECOME INVOLVED IN A NUCLEAR WAR WITH CHINA OVER THE DISPUTED ISLANDS. It did not transpire as such but there was a great fear.

"China’s PLA forces carry out landing drills near Taiwan outpost days after elections"

Called Chin-Men in this graphic. Known better to the world as Quemoy.

"China’s People's Liberation Army held live-fire exercises and training drills close to Taiwan only days after the presidential elections, which saw Tsai Ing-wen, of the Democratic Progressive Party, winning a convincing victory."

"The People’s Liberation Army based in the Fujian provincial city of Xiamen – 10km [slightly more than six miles] opposite one of self-ruled Taiwan’s outposts – has carried out live-fire exercises and landing drills just days after the pro-independence opposition party won elections in Taiwan."

. . . .

"Xiamen lies opposite to Quemoy, an island controlled by Taiwan since Kuomintang military forces were defeated by the Communists and fled to Taiwan in 1949."

Click on image for a larger view. Quemoy and Matsu [further north] little fly-speck islands close to mainland China. A bone caught in the throat for decades so to speak. The Taiwan Strait Crisis.

From sixty years ago the number of artillery shells fired from mainland China toward Nationalist targets on Quemoy and Matsu was a daily tally item as reported by the main stream media via the evening news.

Sixty years deja vu all over again? You decide.
